To judge any aspect of yourself as bad or ugly is to abuse yourself. When you say hurtful phrases like “you are fat!”, “you are ugly!”, you are being mistreated; when you eat too much or below the proper portion, too. Therefore, the relationship we have with food says more about our mind, than about our body.

Phrases like the ones above keep us in a cycle of self-sabotage and self-directed hatred that we may think we have under control many times, but that doesn't heal until we work it out. As long as we use food to reward/punish ourselves, we are giving it a power that is only in our minds.

Eating and nourishing are acts of self-love, we feed our body as much as we want. Restricting is punishing, eating more than our body asks for is also a punishment. Depriving our body of food it needs, looking for an external result, is abuse. Change comes from within, it begins by loving your body, caressing it, thanking it for everything it does for you.

Today, start with simple steps. Make a positive statement in front of the mirror, write yourself a note, give yourself positive messages. Choose your food according to what your body needs, get guidance from a professional. Learn to listen to your body. Are you up for the challenge?
